Construction set to start on Interstate 215 from Murrieta Hot Springs Road to Scott Road

How is RCTC Addressing Traffic Congestion on I‑215?

With improvements completed to the Route 60/91/I‑215 interchange and local roadways, RCTC has shifted its focus to enhancing mobility on the remaining portions of I‑215 in Riverside County. These improvements have been divided into two major areas:

The first area is a 29.25-mile section of Interstate 215 from Murrieta Hot Springs Road in Murrieta to State Route 60 in Riverside. The widening is designed to relieve traffic congestion, improve existing freeway operations and contribute to the area’s economic vitality.

Go to the project fact sheet.

The Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC), the agency responsible for transportation in Riverside County and the administrator of Measure A (Riverside County’s ½ cent sales tax for transportation improvements), is preparing to widen I‑215 in this area. RCTC has identified I‑215 as one of four corridors that will collectively receive an investment of $2 billion in Measure A revenue during the next 10 years. An aggressive schedule has been set using funds from Measure A, Proposition 1B bonds and other state and federal sources to allow rapid delivery of these projects.

Because of the timing of the funding that can be made secured, widening of the I-215 corridor has been divided into three projects:

The second area of improvements to I‑215 in Riverside County is a project to widen the section of I‑215 between Riverside and the San Bernardino County line. This project also is in the planning stages. RCTC is working with San Bernardino Associated Governments to complete early studies for adding a carpool lane in each direction. Need

Traffic congestion continues to increase along I‑215, especially during peak morning and evening commute hours. Although these projects unfortunately will not relieve all of the future traffic congestion that is forecast to occur, widening the freeway will help reduce traffic delays, gasoline consumption and pollutants.

Savings

Vehicle Delays Saved Per Day 3,200 Hours 4,600 Hours 6,900 Hours
Gasoline Saved Per Day 1,400 Gallons 2,000 Gallons 3,000 Gallons
Pollutants Saved Per Year 3 Tons 10 Tons 36 Tons

Benefits

For the General Public, the I-215 widening projects will add freeway capacity, thereby reducing vehicle delays, gasoline consumption and pollutants. The North I-215 project will add carpool lanes, which will encourage ridesharing along this heavily travelled corridor.

For Businesses, the projects will expedite the movement of goods and services along the I-215 corridor.

Everyone will benefit from improvements in efficiency and capacity.
