Why is the South I‑215 Project Needed?

Traffic congestion continues to increase along I‑215, especially during peak morning and evening commute hours. Although this project unfortunately will not relieve all of the future traffic congestion that is forecast to occur, widening the freeway will help reduce traffic delays, gasoline consumption and pollutants.

The project will help create roadway capacity for the area’s future population and business needs, facilitate the movement of people and goods and provide a more effective connection between San Diego County and Riverside County. A number of project savings also are anticipated for this section of the freeway:

  • Vehicle delays saved per day — 3,200 hours
  • Gasoline saved per day — 1,400 gallons
  • Pollutants saved per year — 3 tons
